What is Airbrush Tanning?
During Airbrush Tanning, a trained professional will spray a special tanning formula directly onto your skin. Airbrush tanning solutions also typically have a normal bronzer that provides an immediate tan effect and helps the operator to distinguish areas of the skin that are applied and unapplied. Most of this added bronzer will come off in the first shower/bath after application. The true tan will develop and darken over the next 8 to 12 hours creating a great, healthy looking tan.
What is in the formula?
The main ingredient in the tanning solution is DHA, or dihydroxyacetone. DHA is a sugar derivative which reacts with the amino acids on the outer layer of your skin, producing a bronzing effect.
How long should my tan last?
The average tan should last between 7 - 10 days. The coloring doesn't wash off, but it gradually fades as the dead skin cells slough off. Factors such as skin type, activity level and post-tan maintenance can cause your results to vary. Multiple applications may produce deeper color. Allow 10-12 hours after your tanning session before showering for maximum effect and duration. Apply moisturizer morning and evening after your first post-tan shower. Moisturize daily thereafter. Hydrated skin is essential in maintaining a longer lasting tan.
Is it safe?
Yes, all ingredients have been through extensive testing and are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). DHA is the only color additive approved by the FDA for use in sunless tanning products. Most sunless tanning products don't contain a sunscreen and, therefore, don't protect your skin from sun damage. If you spend time outdoors, be sure to apply a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 before going outside.
How long is the session?
The entire session takes less than 20 minutes - 5 to 10 minutes for the airbrushing and 10 minutes for the drying process.
How do I prepare for my tanning session?
Shower, exfoliate, and shave/wax 8 hours before your tanning session. This promotes even coverage and helps extend your tan by removing dead skin. Use a non-oil based exfoliant. Lotions and make-up may act as a barrier to prevent the tanning solution from reaching and interacting with the skin. In general, the skin should be clean and free from applied products.
What should I wear?
Wear loose fitting, dark clothing and undergarments to your session. The cosmetic bronzer may rub off on your clothing but will wash out of most fabrics. The solution may stain nylons and silks, so avoid wearing these fabrics to your session or in the hours after your appointment.
Do not wear make-up, moisturizer, or deodorant to your tanning session. Remove contact lenses and jewelry.
You may tan in a swimsuit or undergarments for the session. Some clients prefer to tan topless to avoid tan lines.
